Industry Sector Report for WSSD

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (also known as Rio+10), will be a summit gathering from 26 August to 4 September 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa, of world governments, concerned citizens, United Nations agencies, multilateral financial institutions and other major actors to assess global change since the historic United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), of 1992. In Johannesburg, the world will take a critical look back at UNCED, and aim to arrive at a comprehensive, frank and useful review of the past ten years.

For more details on Johannesburg Summit, visit the Johannesburg Summit website.

UNEP, in partnership with various industry organisations, has launched a reporting initiative to gauge progress by the private sector towards sustainable development. This effort will contribute to the wider review of progress with the implementation of Agenda 21, under the framework of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), UNEP DTIE is facilitating the production of 22 sectoral reports, each addressing the following issues:

  • economic, environmental and social profile;
  • strategies, approaches and measures for progress; and
  • future challenges and targets.
Ultimately, this effort will result in an unprecedented industry-driven initiative to outline the way ahead towards sustainable entrepreneurship. Such an undertaking will set the basis for developing sectoral agendas against which to track progress in the years to come— to the benefit of all stakeholders.

Two industry organisations developed sector reports on their respective sectors in coordination with partner in the sector.

bulletInternational Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) [http://www.fertilizer.org/ifa/] IFA is a non-profit industrial organization with around 500 member companies in about 80 countries.

bulletTrade unions, industry and sustainability

A key component of sustainable business is the respect of labour rights and conditions. The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) has prepared a series of documents that present viewpoints on what key issues a particular industry should address in order to move itself closer to sustainability.

Input was solicited from labour groups, including the appropriate International Trade Secretariats (ITS). The reports however are not necessarily official policy of any ITS nor are they comprehensive given the limited time-frame for writing and research. Moreover, there are other relevant trade union policy documents and points of view than those represented here.

These documents should therefore be considered an introduction to trade union thinking on these issues rather than a final or complete position. This work feeds directly into the UNEP-led sector report process.

The ICFTU examined the following industry sectors. The associated reports are available as PDF.

Agrifood - includes agriculture, food, drink, and fertilisers (PDF logo 50 KB)

If you have any comments on the report, please contact the ICFTU directly.
